Frequently asked questions about the brain with contrast/CEMRI brain scan
The following are the most common questions and their answers about the CEMRI brain scan.
Why is the CEMRI brain test performed?
An MRI brain with contrast is done to get a detailed picture of the brain. This helps your doctor is an assessment of your brain condition. Some of the cases where a brain MRI with contrast is prescribed are listed below:
- Stroke
- Infections
- Tumors
- Cysts
- Swelling
- Aneurysms (bulging in the blood vessels of the brain)
- Bleeding (Haemorrhage)
- Inflammation
- Problems with development or structure
The MRI brain with contrast will help to isolate the exact location of any abnormalities in the brain.
How to prepare for the CEMRI brain test?
The MRI scan with contrast involves an additional procedure than that of a normal MRI scan. You will be injected with a contrast dye a few hours before the procedure. This will help to detect the exact location of the abnormality in the brain.
You are restricted to carry any of the following objects inside the MRI scan room.
- Purse, wallet, money clip, credit cards, cards with magnetic strips
- Electronic devices such as beepers or cell phones
- Hearing aids
- Metal jewelry, watches
- Pens, paper clips, keys, coins
- Hair barrettes, hairpins
- Any article of clothing that has a metal zipper, buttons, snaps, hooks, underwire, or metallic threads
- Shoes, belt buckles, safety pins
What is the procedure of the CEMRI brain scan?
The MRI machine looks like a tube that has both ends open. You lie down on a movable table that slides into the opening of the tube. A technologist monitors you from another room.
During the MRI brain scan, the internal part of the magnet produces repetitive tapping, thumping, and other noises. Earplugs or music may be provided to help block the noise.
If you are worried about feeling claustrophobic inside the MRI machine, talk to your doctor beforehand. You may receive a sedative before the scan. MRI brain scans can also be done in an open MRI machine which is generally more expensive.
In some cases, a contrast material (MRI brain with contrast), may be injected through an intravenous (IV) line into a vein in your hand or arm.
The contrast material enhances the appearance of certain details. The material used for MRIs is less likely to cause an allergic reaction than the material used for CT scans.
An MRI can last up to 45 minutes or more. You must hold very still because the movement can blur the resulting images.
What are the risks involved in a CEMRI brain scan?
MRI does not use ionizing radiation (high-energy radiation that can potentially cause damage to DNA, like the x-rays used CT scans). So it is generally safe compared to other imaging techniques.
But the contrast dye injected may cause allergic reactions in the body. Other than this there are no known complications in the contrast-enhanced MRI scan.
