What is a CT scan brain or CT scan head?

CT Scan is an advanced version of a normal X-Ray procedure. Instead of one beam, multiple x-ray beams are used while performing a CT Scan on the brain.

This helps create a more detailed 3-dimensional image of the brain and analyze any kind of injuries in the head, headaches, causes of internal bleeding, strokes, and brain tumors if any. Also, sinuses can be evaluated by the results of a CT Scan of the brain.

Unlike an X-ray procedure, a CT scan successfully provides a detailed image of soft tissues and blood vessels.

Why is a CT scan brain prescribed?

Your doctor is likely to prescribe a CT Scan of the brain in case he observes the following symptoms.

  • Paralysis of different body parts
  • Numbness in fingers and toes
  • Vertigo
  • Dizziness
  • Constant headaches or migraines
  • Brain injury leading to internal bleeding
  • Brain tumor
  • Ruptured aneurysm
  • Abnormalities in the middle ear bones
  • If surgery is coming up
  • Damage caused by a stroke
  • Loss of consciousness
  • To check the success of brain surgery
  • Enlarged brain cavities
  • Blood clotting
  • Bone and tissue damage

What are the different types of CT scan brain studies available?

CT scan brain/CT scan head/NCCT brain

CT scan of the brain is also called a CT scan of the head or Non-Contrast CT brain or NCCT brain in short. This scan produces a detailed image of the brain by using x-ray beams, projecting them through the body of the patient, and then studying the absorbed rays. Normally, this test takes anywhere between 10-30 minutes.

CT scan brain with contrast/CT scan head with contrast/CECT brain

Sometimes, the doctors recommend a CT scan with contrast. This procedure is supposed to give better images of certain areas of the brain as compared to the normal CT Brain. A radioactive substance is given to the patient either orally or through injection before the test. This substance is absorbed by the body and interacts with the CT Scan to give vivid images during the scan.

After taking the radioactive substance, the patient is supposed to wait for 30 minutes before the scan begins. In some cases, the labs will also test serum creatinine (a kidney test) and uric acid before they give you the contrast agent. Abnormal kidney or uric acid tests will impact whether the contrast agent can be given to you or not. You may be allowed to take your recent serum creatinine test and uric acid test results with you to the lab. Some labs may insist that these tests be done with them. So overall, this CT brain scan with contrast may take anywhere from an hour to three hours. Know more about the CECT scan.

CT scan brain angiography/CT scan head angiography

A typical CT brain scan angiography involves the use of an iodine-based contrast material to help get a better diagnosis of the problems with the brain of the patient. A prior test will be done to check if there the body is allergic to the contrast material, and precautionary steps will be taken accordingly. In this particular test, x-ray beams with catheters are used, combined with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To assess the images formed, a special computer is used and different software is needed.

CT scan brain with perfusion/CT scan head with perfusion

To figure out the particular spaces which are adequately supplied with blood, a CT scan brain with perfusion is done. This gives a detailed image of the blood flow in the brain. The best feature of this is that it is utterly fast, painless, and very accurate. This helps to assess brain tumors and treat stroke.

How to prepare for a CT scan brain?

Follow these simple steps before going for the CT scan brain:

  • Take off all the metal objects like jewelry, watches, piercings, credit/debit cards.
  • Take off the hearing aids, if any.
  • Don’t go inside the chambers with spectacles on.
  • Take off the braces from your teeth.
  • No hairpins, safety pins, metal zippers are to be taken inside.
  • Pens, pocket knives, eye lenses must also be removed.

Also, your doctor will ask you to not drink or eat anything a specific number of hours before the test if the contrast material is going to be used during the test. Let your physician know if you are pregnant. Precautionary steps would be taken, accordingly.

How is the procedure performed?

CT scan machine is like a huge rectangular or circular tunnel with an examination table inside, on which the patient is supposed to lie down. This table can move inside and come outside. In a ring are the x-ray tube and electronic x-ray detectors, opposite each other.

This entire setup is attached to a computer controller in a different chamber altogether. Sometimes, there are also speakers and microphones connected to the control room, allowing the doctor and the patient to converse. Once the scan starts, a number of beams of x-ray, combined with electronic x-ray detectors are rotated around the patient.

The x-ray beam goes through the patient’s body and is projected on the detectors. Ultimately, these absorbed rays are monitored and an image is formed of the organ under inspection.

Generally, many images of the brain are taken from different angles. A selection of the most important images is printed on the x-ray film for you to show to your doctor. Also, the radiologists give the report along with the x-ray film of the CT scan of the head.

Are there any risks?

There are very few risks associated with the CT scan brain. As the x-ray beams are used to obtain images in a CT scan, the radiation exposure is very limited and it is generally harmless.

There are some chances of developing allergic reactions if the contrast dye is used. So it is very important to inform your doctor if you have any known allergies to the contrast agent before the scan.

How long does it take to get the results?

Generally, the brain or head CT scan results will be available within 24 to 48 hours of the procedure.

Similar to a brain CT scan, there are common CT scan studies like CT scan abdomen, CT scan KUB, and coronary calcium scan. We have written detailed blogs on the cost, purpose, and procedure of the scans.
