How to prepare for the procedure?

There are no special preparations required for the CT scan. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities before the CT scan.

You may be asked to change into a gown provided by the lab during the procedure. You are not allowed to carry any items with metallic contents inside the CT scan room.

Sometimes, a contrast material may be used to produce more enhanced images of the body part. The contrast dye may be given orally or injected in your vein. Your doctor will provide some special instructions if the contrast dye is used.

How is the procedure done?

CT scan is a quick and non-invasive imaging technique. The CT machine looks like a large tube with X ray attached to it.  You will be asked to lie down on a table that slides into the CT machine.

The X Ray attached to the CT machine rotates around your body part clicking several images in thin slices. You will hear some buzzing noise, which is the sound of taking pictures throughout the procedure.

You should stay still throughout the procedure as any movement may distort the images.

The entire procedure will be monitored by a radiologist from a different room. The radiologist will be able to hear and speak to you with the help of a microphone and speakers during the scan.

Generally, the entire process of a CT scan lasts up to 20 minutes depending on the study and the part of the body that is examined.

What are the risks associated with CT?

CT scan involves limited or very few side effects. The CT scan uses X ray to generate detailed images. So you will be exposed to a limited amount of radiation which is generally harmless. But if the CT is done regularly, there is a slight risk of developing cancer over time.

It is generally advised to avoid a CT scan if you are pregnant or expected to be pregnant. The radiation from the machine may sometimes harm the fetus.

There are chances of developing allergic reactions due to the contrast material. If you already have some kidney disorders, the contrast dye may cause kidney failure. So it is important for you to inform your doctor regarding any known allergies to contrast dye prior to the procedure.
