What is a CT scan?

The full form of CT scan is a Computed Tomography scan. It is also known as CAT (Computed Axial Tomography) scan. The CT scan can be done on any part of the body and it provides a detailed image of the body part examined compared to the normal X-ray scan. It helps to visualize our internal organs with the help of X-ray beams. The reports of the CT scan can be used for different studies and it helps the doctor in making a further diagnosis.

What are the different types of CT scans?

The CT scan can be either be a CECT scan or an NCCT scan or an HRCT scan. On the basis of your diagnosis, your doctor will suggest the CT scan you should take.

NCCT scan

NCCT scan refers to a Non-Contrast CT scan. It is a normal CT scan in which the body part to be examined is scanned through a CT machine without the use of any contrast dye or material.

CECT scan

CECT scan refers to a Contrast-Enhanced CT scan. Sometimes, the doctor needs better-enhanced images of the body part to be examined for proper diagnosis. In such cases, a contrast material will be given either orally or injected into the body before the scan. The CECT scan is mostly done to visualize the blood vessels or intestines. Know more about the CECT scan.

HRCT scan

HRCT scan refers to a High-Resolution CT scan. It is done to produce extremely high-resolution images of various body parts, especially helps in detecting lung diseases. Know more about the HRCT scan.

Why is a CT scan done?

  • Examine muscle and bone disorders
  • The plan guided biopsy, surgery, or radiation therapy

  • Monitor the effectiveness of ongoing treatment

The different studies of a CT scan are

PET-CT scan

A PET-CT scan is a special study of CT scan that combines a CT scan and a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan. This scan can help your doctor to get detailed information about your cancer.

CT perfusion study

CT perfusion study is used to look at the blood flow in the brain. For this study, a contrast agent is injected into the patient’s vein to highlight the blood flow in the brain. This shows the damaged areas of the brain and the areas where there is an insufficient blood supply.

CCTA

CCTA refers to Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography. It is a procedure done to visualize the arteries that supply blood to the heart to determine if the arteries have been narrowed by plaque (made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood) buildup. This type of CT study is mostly ordered to scan the heart and blood vessels.

How is a CT scan performed?

The CT scan machine resembles a long tube with an X-ray attached to it. The lab technician will ask you to lie straight on the table that will slide into the CT machine.

The X-ray that is attached to the CT machine rotates around the body part to be examined and captures several images in thin slices. It is very important to remain still throughout the procedure as it can result in blur or distorted images. You might hear loud noises due to the rotation inside the scanner.

The radiologist will monitor the entire procedure from a different room where the computer is located and will be able to hear and speak to you with the help of a microphone and speakers during the scan. The computer stores the captured images in an electronic form.

The entire procedure of a CT scan can take up to 20 to 30 minutes depending on the study and the body part to be examined.

Is there any preparation required for a CT scan?

CT scan requires no special preparation. Also, there are no restrictions on diet and you can carry on your regular activities. You are restricted to carry any item that contains metallic content it inside the CT scan room. The lab technician will ask you to change into the gown given in the lab.

In some cases, a contrast material may be given to produce better-enhanced images of the body part to be examined. In such cases, you will have to fast for a certain period and follow some special instructions given by your doctor.

Are there any risks associated with the CT scan?

There are very few risks associated with a CT scan. As the X-ray beams are used to obtain images in a CT scan, you will be exposed to a limited amount of radiation which is generally harmless. But if the CT scan is done on a regular or frequent basis, there is a risk of developing cancer over time.

Pregnant women are advised to avoid a CT scan as the radiation exposure may sometimes harm the unborn child.

There are some chances of developing allergic reactions if the contrast dye is used. So it is very important to inform your doctor if you have any known allergies to contrast dye before the procedure. The use of contrast dye can also result in kidney failure if you already have some kidney disorders.

How long does it take to get the CT scan results?

The radiologist analyzes the captured images and prepares the report.
