Frequently Asked Questions About Doppler Test
What is Doppler Ultrasound?
An Ultrasound Doppler scan can measure the frequency of the blood flow in the veins. It is done to check the injuries to your arteries or to administer other treatment procedures.
A regular ultrasound scanner uses sound waves to produce images of the internal organs, but cannot show blood flow. A Doppler ultrasound helps to diagnose many conditions related to the frequency of blood flow in the veins.
Unlike other invasive radiology imaging procedures such as Angiography, Doppler Test doesn’t involve the use of nuclear medicines.
It is also known as Color Doppler Test or Ultrasound Doppler Scan.
What is the procedure for Color Doppler Ultrasound?
A Doppler ultrasound usually takes about 30 – 60 minutes to complete.
During a Doppler ultrasound, you will be asked to lie comfortably on a bed and expose the part of the body to be examined. Then a sonographer (ultrasound expert) will apply the gel on the body part to avoid friction while rubbing the probe against the skin. The sonographer will press a small hand-held wand-shaped device called a transducer against your skin over the affected area of your body and move it. The rubbing of the probe will not hurt you.
The scanner will receive the sound waves and produce them in the form of images. You will be expected to lie still during the scan as your movement may create blurry images.
Who is recommended for a Color Doppler Test?
Your healthcare provider may recommend a Doppler ultrasound exam if you show signs of:
- DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)-Clots in the blood vessels
- Venous Insufficiency (Pooling of blood in the legs)
- Superficial Thrombophlebitis (inflammation of veins just below the surface of the skin)
- Congenital Heart Disease
- Arterial Occlusion (blocked artery)
- Peripheral Artery Disease (reduced blood circulation in the limbs)
- Aneurysms (bulging of arteries)
- Carotid Artery Stenosis (Narrowing of an artery)
- Arteriosclerosis (hardening of blood arteries)
- Thromboangiitis obliterans (a condition where limbs tend to become inflamed and swollen)
What are the common Doppler studies?
Doppler Test in Pregnancy: Doppler test done during the 6th week of pregnancy shows the frequency of the baby’s blood flow. It detects the movement of the blood in the fetus with the help of soundwaves. It can show the condition of the baby’s heart.
Venous Doppler: A venous Doppler ultrasound is an imaging test used to check the blood circulation in the large veins of the limbs. The scan can detect any blockage or clots in the veins.
Vascular Doppler: A Vascular Doppler ultrasound can detect abnormal flow within an artery or blood vessel.
Transcranial Doppler: Transcranial Doppler (TCD) also known as transcranial color Doppler (TCCD) are types of Doppler ultrasound study that measures the rate and direction of blood flow inside vessels. It is completely a non-invasive method.
Carotid Doppler: A carotid Doppler is an imaging test that uses ultrasound to examine the carotid arteries (vessels that carry blood away from the heart to the body) located in the neck. This scan can detect narrowing of the artery also known as carotid artery stenosis.
