What is HSV Test?

It is a type of virus responsible for sexually transmitted diseases known as Genital Herpes and Oral Herpes. There are two types of common viruses causing herpes:

Herpes Simplex Virus 1
Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV1) causes Oral Herpes. Oral herpes is a viral infection mainly of the mouth area and lips caused by the specific type of the herpes simplex virus 1. The virus causes painful sores on the lips, inside the mouth (gums, tongue, the roof of the mouth, inside the cheeks), nose, chin, neck, and other parts of the face.
It shows symptoms such as:

- and muscle aches.

The HSV1 is contagious and can easily be spread by touching infected saliva and skin (sharing food or skincare products). The virus stays inactively for a longer period of time in the nerve cells even after the treatment. People who have a history of Oral herpes may suffer a reoccurrence of the infection.
Herpes Simplex Virus 2
Herpes Simplex Virus 2 causes Genital herpes that is transmitted when one person comes into contact with affected areas of another person. It is typically transmitted through sexual contacts between two people including vaginal or anal sex.
The active virus travels to the infected part and multiplies on the mucous membrane (the lining of the affected area) in a process known as shedding. The spread of the virus needs skin-on-skin contact with the infected person. It cannot be transmitted through semen and by sharing objects. It is less common to transmit HSV2 through oral sex.
Initially, symptoms appear within 2 weeks after exposure to the virus. The symptoms may include:
- Blisters on the infected areas including (mouth, face, vagina or penis, anus, and buttocks).
- Itching or tingling on the rashes before it becomes blisters.
- Severe blisters may turn into open sores and ooze liquid.
- Swollen lymph glands
- Fever, Headaches, and Body pain
The outbreak of blisters is known as the primary outbreak that lasts longer. The symptoms may not always appear even when the virus is active.
If a pregnant woman has herpes then the virus can easily be transmitted to the fetus. A baby born with herpes may have ulcers on the face, body, and genitals. There can be chances that the baby doesn’t get infected if the baby is delivered through operation (cesarean).
The Procedure of HSV Test
Our body’s immune produces certain antibodies to fight off the infection when it realizes that the virus is active and can harm. Similarly, our immune produces two antibodies known as IgG (Immunoglobulin G) and IgM (Immunoglobulin M) to fight off the herpes infection. A herpes test looks for these antibodies in the blood and detects the virus.
HSV-1 usually infects the mouth, causing oral herpes, and HSV-2 usually infects the genitals causing genital herpes. However, there are a growing number of cases where people are affected with genital HSV-1. Herpes IgG and IgM tests can only tell you that you have been infected. They can’t show where.
Detecting Herpes Simplex Virus against IgM antibody
Herpes IgM antibodies can usually be detected by HSV1 and HSV2 IgM blood tests within 7-10 days after the initial stage of infection. The levels of IgM stay high for approximately two weeks in the blood. After that, they usually decline.
Hence, IgM testing is primarily considered to be useful for detecting when the patient suffers from an acute infection. But often the level of antibodies goes up during an outbreak.
Detecting Herpes Simplex Virus against IGG antibody
Herpes IgG test is one type of blood test for the herpes simplex virus (HSV). In contrast to HSV IgM, the antibodies IgG do not show up until slightly later after the initial infection. The test does not search directly for the virus as the immune reaction takes time to develop after the time of infection.
Tip: If you identify any symptoms of herpes on your body, go to the doctor immediately. You can be tested for sores directly. This type of test is usually considered to be more accurate.

If your HSV IgG shows positive results then it may indicate that the active virus has been present in your body for more than two months. Individuals with recent infections may show positive results through an IgM test.
It is possible that your reports may show false negative or positive results. Often some antibodies have higher levels during a particular period of time. And the condition can be applicable for HSV IgG as well as HSV IgM tests.
It is advised that consult your doctor immediately if you have doubts about your reports. The doctor will help you to interpret your result based on your risk factors and medical history. Many people do not realize that they are already infected. Herpes can also be transmitted if you are not sexually active or your partner has no symptoms.
