The full form of MRA is Magnetic Resonance Angiography/Magnetic Resonance Angiogram. MRA Scan is an imaging technique used to visualize the arteries present in the key areas of your body.
MRA uses radio waves and magnetic fields to detect the blockage in the artery caused due to the cholesterol, calcium, and other blood substances present in your body.

Frequently Asked Questions About MRA Scan
What is an MRA Scan?
The full form of MRA is Magnetic Resonance Angiography / Magnetic Resonance Angiogram. MRA Scan is an imaging technique used to visualize the arteries present in the key areas of your body.
MRA uses radio waves and magnetic fields to detect the blockage in the artery caused due to the cholesterol, calcium, and other blood substances present in your body. Blockage in the artery may affect the normal blood flow in the body and may increase the chance of stroke. MRA also finds out the abnormalities and blood clots in the arteries.
What happens during an MRA?
Unlike CT Angiography, MRA Scan uses powerful magnets and radio waves to visualize the arteries in your body. The technician will ask you to lie on a table that will take you into an MRI scanner. MRI scanner is nothing but a large area of the circular magnetic field.
To avoid any blocks in the blood vessels salt water will be injected through the needle before the MRA test. Sometimes MRA requires a dye (contrast agent) called gadolinium which will be injected into the vein to get a clear and detailed image of the arteries.
The magnetic field present inside the MRI scanner lines up the hydrogen atom from your body for a short period of time. The hydrogen atoms transmit a signal to the radio waves which is sent to the computer. The computer then produces a clear and detailed image of your arteries. You may hear loud tapping noises because of the magnetic field. It is important to remain fixed in the same position to get a clear and quality image.
It usually takes around 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete an MRA scan.
Is there any preparation required for an MRA?
MRA Scan doesn’t require any special preparation. You can have a normal diet. You should wear only the gown provided in the lab. All the jewelry and the metallic objects that affect the magnets should be removed. Sometimes tattoos might also have metal content in their ink, so inform the doctor prior to the test.
Who shouldn’t take an MRA?
MRI Angiography is not advisable for people with the following medical conditions
- Pacemakers
- Cochlear or ear implants
- Pregnant women
- Breast-feeding mothers (can consult your doctor before taking the test)
- Kidney disease
- Spinal stimulator
- Aneurysm clips or other surgical staples
- Metal coils placed in blood vessels
- Recently placed artificial joints
- Insulin or Chemotherapy port
What are the benefits of taking an MRA?
MRA Scan helps to diagnose medical conditions like bulging or widening of an artery part due to some weakness called an arterial aneurysm. Heart diseases, Trauma, and Carotid Artery disease can also be found out in an MRA.
MRI Angiography is the best scan done to examine the cerebral vessels in the brain. This is also called MRI Brain Angiography. This test helps in diagnosing the abnormalities in the blood supply system of the brain. This test can be done with or without the contrast agent. A contrast agent is nothing but the dye which is injected into the veins before taking the test.
Is there any risk of taking an MRA?
MRI Angiography is a non-invasive and painless procedure to get a clear view of your arteries. Sometimes an injection of the dye causes some irritations on your skin. It is better to inform your doctor if you are allergic to chemicals.
People with poor kidney function may face Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, a rare disease that is similar to a skin disease caused by the injection of the dye. It darkens and thickens the large areas of your skin. There is no possibility of being exposed to radiation in an MRI Angiography.
