Frequently Asked Questions About MRI Scan
What is an MRI scan?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the full form of MRI. MRI is a common imaging technique used by most doctors to detect abnormalities in the body. It is used to identify various medical disorders. MRI uses strong electromagnetic radio waves to visualize the internal parts of our bodies. It is non-invasive and there is no exposure to radiation as of X-rays.
Why is an MRI test done?
MRI is mostly done to identify the abnormalities in the internal organs of the body and to monitor the success of ongoing medical treatment. It is normally used to detect the following medical disorders
- Heart diseases
- Problems in the heart structure
- Brain injury
- Stroke
- Liver and Kidney disorders
- Damages in bones
- Injuries in spinal cord
- Blockage in blood vessels
- Joint damages
- Cancer
- Multiple sclerosis
MRI is also done to check the health of ovaries and breasts in women and the prostate in men.
Who shouldn’t take an MRI scan?
MRI is not advisable for the people with following medical conditions
- Pacemakers
- Cochlear or ear implants
- Pregnant women
- Breast-feeding mothers (can consult your doctor before the scan)
- Kidney disease (as MRI scan may result in kidney failure)
- Metal coils placed in blood vessels
- Recently placed artificial joints
As people with metallic implants are not allowed to take a normal MRI scan, an advanced technique called Maverick MRI was developed.
How should I prepare for an MRI scan?
MRI scan does not involve any special preparation. But in some cases, a contrast dye may be given orally or injected into the vein a few hours before the scan to get a more enhanced image. In such cases, you may have to fast for a minimum of 4 hours before the scan.
You are not allowed to carry any object with metal content contained in it and you should change into the gown given in the lab.
What is the procedure of an MRI?
MRI uses strong electromagnetic radio waves to visualize the internal body parts. In general, the MRI machine looks like a large tube with circular magnets around it. These magnets rotate around the body part which is to be examined.
The lab technician will ask you to lie down still on a table that slides into the MRI machine. Then the magnets rotate around you creating strong magnetic fields and the radio waves are directed into the body. The signals will be picked up and sent to a computer located in a different room to process into images. The radiologist will monitor the entire process from a different room where the computer is located.
You may be asked to plug in your earphones as you will hear loud buzzing sounds from the MRI machine throughout the procedure.
Generally, it takes up to 90 minutes to complete the entire procedure depending on the body part that is to be examined.
Is there any risk in an MRI scan?
Generally, there are no possible complications or side-effects associated with the MRI scan. MRI does not use any kind of X-ray to examine the internal organs. So it is completely safe as there is no exposure to radiation.
But the use of contrast dye may lead to allergic reactions in some patients and it may also result in kidney failure if you have any kidney diseases. So it is very important to inform your doctor if you have any known allergic reactions to the contrast agent prior to the scan.
What are the limitations of an MRI?
MRI scan has its own limitations. The images may get distorted if there is any movement during the scan. So it is very important to stay still throughout the procedure, which is completely hard if you are sick. The patients with any metal implants are restricted to take the MRI scan due to the usage of electromagnetic radio waves.
These electromagnetic radio waves may also affect the fetus if you are pregnant. So it is advised for pregnant women not to take the MRI scan during the first trimester.
How long does it take to get the MRI reports?
The radiologist will analyze the produced images and prepare the report. Generally, the report will be available within 1 to 3 days of the scan.
