Frequently Asked Questions About MR Venogram
What is an MRI Venography?
MRI Venography/Venogram full form is Magnetic Resonance Venography. MRV helps to visualize blood vessels in our bodies. MRV focuses on the veins to detect any blood clotting or any abnormalities which may block the blood from reaching the heart.
Generally, disease in veins is less common and less serious compared to the disease in the arteries. Arteries carry oxygen nutritious blood from the heart and veins carry depleted blood to the heart. MRI Angiography is the study of arteries. The MRI Venography cost is less compared to the cost of MRI Angiography / MRA.
MRV Scan is most commonly used to detect and diagnose Cerebral Venous Thrombosis. This is called MRI Venogram Brain. You can also find the best labs for the lowest MRI Venogram Brain / MRV Brain cost exclusively through LabsAdvisor.
How does an MRV Scan work?
The MRI Venography/Venogram or MRV uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to produce a detailed image of the veins. The MRV machine looks like a long tube with magnets on both sides. If your doctor feels it appropriate then you might be injected with a dye to get a detailed image of your vein.
You will be asked to lie down on the table which slides into the MRV or MRI machine. The magnetic field temporarily realigns the hydrogen atom in your body. The radio waves receives a signal from the atoms and send it to the computer. The computer then produces a detailed picture of the veins. You may hear loud noises in between the scan because of the magnets.
During MRV it is important to remain still to get a quality image. The scan usually takes a longer time than the normal CT scans. An entire MRI scan may take between 20 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the information required.
Is there any preparation required for the test?
MRV test does not require any special preparation. You can have your normal diet before the scan. The MRV machine uses strong magnetic pulses. It is advisable not to carry any items with metallic contents. You will be asked to change in a gown and remove the things that might affect the magnetic signals such as jewelry, hairpins, watched, underwire bras, hearing aids, etc. If you have tattoos then inform the doctor, because some of the inks have metal content.
To clear the blocks in the blood vessels you may be injected with salt water first. Then you will be injected with a dye to produce a detailed image of the veins. You may feel slightly cold due to the dye. If you feel uncomfortable then inform the doctor regarding this. The injected dye will be excreted through urine. If you are allergic to the dye or medication it is advisable to consult with the doctor regarding this as there are alternatives to the dye.
What kind of diseases are diagnosed using MRI Venography?
The most common diseases in veins are intracranial venous thrombosis and cerebral venous-occlusive diseases. In some cases, the brain structure of a young infant may not be the same as expected. The brain MRV gives some insight into the blood flow in the veins. MRV can be used to detect neurological problems like intra-cranial hypertension or normal pressure hydrocephalus.
The most common diagnosis done using MRI Venography is to access the venous drainage of the brain which is known as MRI Venogram Brain. The MRI Venogram Brain helps to diagnose and evaluate thrombosis, Tumor of the cerebral venous sinus and Drowsiness, and confusion accompanying a headache. Though the problems in the veins are considered less serious than that of arteries, problems in veins are still dangerous. MRI Venogram Brain helps to detect the problems in the cerebral veins at an early stage.
Who shouldn’t get an MRV?
The MRI Venography is a noninvasive method to diagnose with no side effects. But still, MRV has its own contradictions. The MRV scan is not advised to the person with the following health conditions
- Implanted pacemakers
- Intracranial aneurysm clips
- Cochlear implants
- Certain prosthetic devices
- Implanted drug infusion pumps
- Neurostimulators
- Bone-growth stimulators
- Certain intrauterine contraceptive devices
- Any other type of iron-based metal implants
- Expecting mothers (It is advisable to consult with a doctor before taking the test)
What are the risk factors of an MRV?
Patients who are allergic to the medications, contrast dye, iodine, or shellfish should notify the radiologist. It may also have side effects on other conditions such as allergies, asthma, anemia, hypotension (low blood pressure), and sickle cell disease. It is advisable to discuss with your physician before the procedure.
Is there any side effects in MRI Venography (MRV)?
Magnetic Resonance Venography or MRV uses electro-magnetic pulses and radio waves to visualize the veins in your body. It is a non-invasive and safer method to get a detailed image of your veins. Unlike CT scans that use an X-ray beam, the MRI Venography uses powerful magnets to produce a quality image. In the case of MRI Venography, the possibility of being exposed to radiation is nil.
How long does it take to get the MRV report?
Most of the time it depends on the radiologist. It usually takes at least a day for the radiologist to decipher the information collected in the computer and prepare the report on the results. The radiologist will send the report to your physician.
