Frequently Asked Questions About PET CT Scan
What is a PET Scan?
Positron Emission Tomography Scan is the full form of PET scan. PET CT scan is an advanced imaging technique to identify tumors.
PET scan is a combination of Computed Tomography and Positron Emission Tomography. It is an effective tool to detect tumors that may turn into cancer.
It is also done to evaluate the success of ongoing treatment for cancer.
Who shouldn’t undergo a PET CT Scan?
Though the PET scan is much effective in identifying cancer than any other imaging technique, it has its own limitations. As the test requires contrast dye and uses radiation to detect tumors, the following people are advised not to take the PET CT scans.
- Mother of a newborn
PET CT Scan uses radioactive tracers to identify tumors. These radioactive tracers may stay in the body for a few days after undergoing the procedure.
If you had given birth recently then these radioactive tracers may affect the newborn baby when you breastfeed, as it stays in your body.
- Pregnant Women
It is advised to consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or expected to be pregnant before the test. The radiation used in the procedure may harm the fetus.
- Kidney Disease
If you are already suffering from any kind of kidney disorder, then the contrast dye used during the procedure may lead to kidney failure.
- Allergic or having a medical condition
Sometimes people may develop allergic reactions due to the contrast material used. So it is important to inform your doctor if you have any kind of known allergic reactions to the contrast dye, iodine, etc.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is performed with the help of radioactive tracers to get a detailed image of our body. You will be injected with the glucose-containing radioactive tracers a few hours before the procedure.
You will be asked to lie down on the table attached to the PET scan machine that slides to the center. The radioactive signals in the body will be picked and sent to a special computer to process into images.
These radioactive tracers will be absorbed by the cells at different rates. The tumor cells absorb this at a higher rate compared to other cells. So these tracers will accumulate in the area where the tumor is present and highlight them as hot spots in the image.
What are the advantages of PET CT Scan?
- PET CT scan is capable to detect and differentiate tumor cells at an early stage. Whereas other imaging technique cannot differentiate the cancer cells from normal cells.
- PET Scan is a non-invasive imaging technique to detect and diagnose cancer.
- It is capable of differentiating both the cancerous and non-cancerous cells.
- It is also done to diagnose various medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, etc.
