There are several medical causes that you probably ignore, leading to utter exhaustion on a daily basis. Here is a list of all the uncanny diseases or deficiencies you could be having and should get rid of immediately to get back to being as fit as a fiddle.

Top 11 Reasons Your Feel Tired

Reason 1: Anemia

Anemia or the loss of red blood cells is a leading cause of feeling tired. Anemia is surprisingly prevalent in very high numbers in Indian women. Anemia takes away the pigmentation from your body and the skin tends to appear pale. Paleness is the first sign of realizing that you could perhaps be suffering from Anemia. Red blood cells are the carriers of oxygen from lungs to the other tissues and cells. Deficiency of iron or certain vital vitamins could lead to anemia. Also, blood loss, internal bleeding, arthritis, cancer, kidney failures, of course, are other major factors leading to suffering from Anemia.

Rapid heartbeat, constant fatigue, chest aches, sleeping disorders, lack of concentration, headache are few of the symptoms of an anemic person.

Anemia is very common in women in India aged anywhere between 18-45 years. Deficiency of iron is the major cause.  You can get tested for iron deficiency by getting  a Ferritin Test done. Click here to know more. It is a very easy test and is performed as a blood test. You will be required to fast for 12 hours before the test, to evaluate the current level of iron in your blood. Both deficiency, and excess of iron are harmful for the body.

Reason 2: Thyroid Dysfunction

The gland, about the size of an infant’s fist, in the front portion of a person’s neck, is called the thyroid gland. It generates hormones to regulate metabolism, which if released in excess, decreases fat in the body. Similarly, deficiency of the same hormone may lead to an excess fat gain. Thyroid dysfunction is a leading cause of fatigue in Indian women (and men too in some cases)

Muscle fatigue, too much sudden fat loss or gain, weakness, utter body warmth, increased heart rate, irregular menstrual periods, increase in thirst are some of the major symptoms observed a person suffering from thyroid. Also, muscle soreness, constipation, inability to concentrate are the other less known symptoms.

A simple blood test called Thyroid Function Test can check whether your thyroid is working as required. Know more about this test which covers T3, T4 and TSH hormones, here

Reason 3: Diabetes

It’s hard to figure out if one does or does not have diabetes. When the body refuses to use glucose (sugar) properly, that’s when diabetes occurs. The glucose gets built up in the blood, leading to the low energy levels in the body, thus causing fatigue.

Hunger, weight loss, yeast infections, frequent urination, excessive thirst, irritability, blurred vision are some of the easily recognized symptoms of a diabetic patient.

HbA1c Test measures the average blood sugar level in your body over the last few weeks. The test is very useful in determining if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic. Know more about HbA1c test for diabetes check here.

Reason 4. Vitamin D Deficiency

Deficiency of Vitamin D is a very common cause of fatigue. Our country gets ample sunshine but still we lack this sunshine vitamin. The most common symptoms of this type of deficiency are weight gain, low bone density, exhaustion, pain in joints, depression, which is quite different from the common myth that says that vitamin D only helps in strengthening bones and teeth. This deficiency is caused due to less exposure to sunlight, intake of food that is not as rich in vitamins, or/and having dark skin.

We recommend a test to measure the content of Vitamin D in your body. This test is called 25 hydroxy-vitamin D blood test. Having 20 to 50 nanograms/mL is considered to be sufficient in a healthy human body, however, it should not, in any case, should go below 12 ng/mL. Know more about Vitamin D deficiency and this test here.

Spending more time in the sunlight and taking Vitamin D supplements, recommended by the doctor, are some ways to overcome this deficiency.

Reason 5: Liver Not Functioning Well

If you liver is not functioning well, then fatigue will set in. The unfortunate part is that the symptoms of liver dysfunction are not pronounced which leaves us all vulnerable to liver dysfunction for very long.

In order to screen liver infections, scarring, liver disorders, and fatigue, liver function test is done. Health of liver is determined by analysing the levels of proteins, liver enzymes, and bilirubin in the blood. The most known tests like alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin, bilirubin are performed to measure the enzymes released by the liver when exposed to damage. High levels of ALT is a signal that the liver could be damaged. Muscular problems or liver damages are a result of release of AST. Increased levels of Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) indicate liver damage, blockage of bile ducts or bone diseases.

In order to make sure that the liver is making the right protein, albumin test is done. Bilirubin, the waste product, if found in the blood, pin-points liver damage. All these are indications that liver tests need to be done. Damaged liver is life threatening and sickening, leading to fatigue, weakness and jaundice. Thus, this test is highly recommended. Know more about liver function tests here.

Reason 6: Kidneys Not Doing Their Job Well

Kidneys perform the key function of cleaning our bodies. If that function is not done well, fatigue is a natural by-product. High blood pressure, fatigue, blood in urine, painful urination, frequent urges to urinate are very common symptoms of kidney infection.

Simple blood and urine tests are performed to analyse the problems with kidney functioning. The panel of tests is called Kidney Function Test. It covers parameters like serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. Serum Creatinine Test is done to measure the level of creatinine in the blood. A high level indicates kidney problem. Blood Urea Nitrogen is done to check waste products in the blood and measure the amount of nitrogen in blood. A BUN level in between 7 to 20 is considered normal. However, a higher level indicates an unhealthy kidney.

Reason 7: Some Infection That Your Body is Fighting

If you are suffering from some infection, the body is busy fighting it leaving less energy for other tasks and hence you feeling tired.

Complete Blood Count (CBC) test is commonly used to get a picture of specific disorders that might govern your health. It basically measures the increase or decrease in the number of cells in the body. A range of conditions can be diagnosed by this test, including anemia, infection, and even cancer. If you’re suffering from excessive fatigue and restlessness on a daily basis, this test is highly recommended.

This is a very normal test in which blood will be extracted from your vein and will be sent to the lab for further analysis.

Reason 8: Deficiency or Excess of Calcium in the Body

Excess of calcium leads to fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, constipation, and increased thirst. Calcium deficiency leads to kidney stones, bone diseases, and sometimes, neurological disorders. Calcium helps in regulating blood pressure, and strengthening bones and teeth.

Calcium Blood Test is recommended to identify deficiency or excess of calcium.  Anything in the range of 8.8 to 10.4 mg per deciliter is considered adequate. It is recommended to use supplements and make amends in your diet plans according to the calcium levels found in the test.

Reason 9: Deficiency of Electrolytes

Sodium, potassium and chloride are key electrolytes in our body. They are required for proper functioning of our muscles and nerves. Sometimes, a low level of electrolytes is the cause of our fatigue.

Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium Chlorine) Tests panel is used to measure the levels of bicarbonate, sodium, potassium, and chlorine in the blood. These components keep the body’s fluids stabilized and help in making the body function normally. Bicarbonate maintains the pH of the body. When a person feels nauseated, confused, weak, and tired, an electrolyte panel test is recommended.

Simple blood tests are performed to determine the levels of the components in the patient’s blood. Normally, 15-145 mEq/L of Sodium, 3.5-5.0 mEq/L of Potassium, 98-108 mmol/L of Chlorine, and 2230 mmol/L of Bicarbonate is considered healthy for a human body.

Reason 10: Deficiency of Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid

As the headline suggests, these two key ingredients when in less quantity in the body cause fatigue. Deficiency of Vitamin B12 can also cause depression. Know more about Vitamin B12 deficiency here.

Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid Tests tests are generally performed together. Vitamin B12 and Folate tests can be done via blood sample. Deficiency of this vitamin could lead to permanent nerve damages, which is why this is something not to be ignored. Folic Acid and B12 are vitamins that the body does not naturally produce. Hence, they should be inculcated in the diet, externally.

Reason 11: Magnesium Deficiency

Alongwith the deficiency of calcium, deficiency of magnesium is a reason for someone feeling tired. Muscle weakness, twitching, cramping are some additional symptoms of magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium Test is required to check for this deficiency. It is a simple blood based test.
