The Procedure of Fibroscan
Fibroscan is similar to an ultrasound test that measures the stiffness of the liver to diagnose liver infections. It is an alternative to liver biopsy.
Liver Biopsy is a traditional invasive and expensive method of diagnosing liver diseases where a small piece of liver is taken through a needle for examination. Fibroscan is non-invasive and more accurate than Liver Biopsy.
The stiffness of the liver helps your doctor to assess the stage of liver infection. This scan also evaluates the scar tissue (fibrosis) and the amount of fat present in the liver.
Your doctor may recommend you take a Fibroscan if you have the following problems which may lead to severe liver disease or liver failure.
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Jaundice
- Abdominal Pain and Swelling
- Dark urine
- Pale or blood-colored stool
Pregnant women and people having cardiac implanted devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators are not recommended for taking a Fibroscan test. Because this scan uses high-frequency sound waves to measure liver inflammation.
Ultrasound Fibroscan detects the following chronic liver diseases
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Alcoholic liver disease
- NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis)
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease (Genetic diseases)
- Cirrhosis
Fibroscan does not require any special preparation. You should not intake any food or liquid, even water for two to three hours prior to the scan. You can wear comfortable dress.
Fibroscan uses the Elastography technique which is similar to an ultrasound. Elastography is an imaging technology to measure the stiffness of the soft tissue. Fibroscan uses high-frequency sound waves to get a clear image of the liver and to measure its stiffness.
The radiologist will ask you to lie on your back with the right arm raised above your head. He will apply a gel on the examination area to avoid any friction between the skin and the probe.
Then he places a probe like an ultrasound probe on the area where the liver is. The probe emits sound waves and sends painless vibration through your body into the liver. It also measures the time taken for the sound waves to reach the liver and this evaluates the condition of the liver.
The computer records the data and displays a clear picture of the liver. The picture displayed helps the radiologist to analyze and prepare the report.
It usually takes only 10 to 20 minutes to complete a Fibroscan test.
Fibroscan is safe and a painless procedure. There are no risks or complications in doing a Fibroscan.
Fibroscan measures the stiffness of the liver and the degree of liver inflammation. This scan is also recommended for diagnostic purposes.
If the time taken for the sound waves to reach the liver is longer than normal, it indicates that your liver is in a damaging condition. Your doctor may prescribe you some medications, surgeries or other additional tests.
