Frequently Asked Questions About RA Factor Test
What is RA Factor Test?
Rheumatoid arthritis is the full form of the RA factor. Rheumatoid factor test is primarily done to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that affects the joints. This test helps to differentiate RA from other forms of arthritis. RF test measures the level of rheumatoid factor in the blood.
Normally the rheumatoid factor will not be present in a normal individual. It is an antibody produced by your immune system that attacks the healthy tissues and cells in your body. It generally binds to other antibodies and is not usually present in an individual. RA factor test helps in assisting the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
It is also sometimes known as RF. The rheumatoid factor test alone is not sufficient to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. There are other factors that increase the level of RF in the blood such as cancer, inflammatory lung disease, cirrhosis, chronic infection, dermatomyositis, lupus, connective tissue disease, etc. So the rheumatoid factor test is only one of the tools to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis.
When is RA Factor Test Done?
Your doctor will ask you to take the RF test if you show symptoms of having rheumatoid arthritis such as
- Bone loss
- Joint stiffness
- Swelling in joints
- Pain in joint
- Nodules under the skin
This test is also done to diagnose Sjogren syndrome, an autoimmune disorder.
Is there any Preparation Required for RA Factor Test?
RA Factor test is a simple blood test. There are no special preparations required for the test. You can have a normal diet and carry on with your regular activities.
It is important to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medications. It is also recommended to wear half-sleeved cloth to the test for convenience.
What is the procedure of the RA Factor Test?
The procedure of the RA factor test is similar to that of any other blood test. An elastic band will be tied around your arm to make the veins swell. A disinfectant liquid will be used to clean the area from where the blood is to be drawn. Then a needle will be injected into the vein to draw the blood which will be collected in a tube.
After removing the needle, the puncture site will be pressed with a cotton ball to stop the bleeding. The collected blood sample will be sent to the laboratory for further testing.
What does the RA Factor Test Result Mean?
The test measures the level of rheumatoid factor that is diluted in the blood. The normal range of rheumatoid factor is less than 1:16. A positive test result indicates that the rheumatoid factor is present in the blood. It also indicates the severity of the disease or more tendency towards rheumatoid disease. More than 80 percent of patients with rheumatoid arthritis show positive RF.
If the results are negative, it means that you do not have any rheumatoid factor disease. But it cannot be ruled out only based on the RA factor test, as about 20 percent of people with RA have a low level of RF. Your doctor may ask you to take additional tests such as anti-CCP antibodies to know the cause of RA factor symptoms.
