What is a CT scan?
CT Scan or Computed Tomography Scan is a kind of X-ray that can create detailed images of various body parts. CT Scans can be done on various body organs including chest, spine, liver, brain, and even heart.
Your doctor may recommend a general CT Scan, which is also called Non-Contrast CT or NCCT, a high-resolution CT Scan (HRCT) or CT Scan with a contrast agent or dye (CECT Scan).
These days there is even a CT Scan that can create detailed images of the heart and surrounding blood vessels to measure the level of blockage in blood vessels. This is called CT Coronary Angiography.
Why is a CT scan done?
CT scan is a non-invasive and quick imaging technique. It is done to detect and diagnose various abnormalities such as
- Tumor
- Brain injury
- Fractures
- Infections
- Cancer
- Blockage in blood vessels
- Internal bleeding
It is also done to plan for a guided biopsy and surgery.
How to prepare for the CT scan procedure?
Generally, there are no special preparations required for the CT scan. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities before the procedure.
In some cases, a contrast material will be used to get enhanced images of your internal organs. In this case, you should fast for at least 12 hours before the procedure. The contrast dye will be given either orally or injected into the vein.
How is the procedure performed?
CT Scan machines have a round core, in which the x rays are concentrated on the part to be tested. You should lie down on a table that slides into the CT scan machine.
Once you are inside the CT machine, the X-rays will pass through your body. These signals will be picked up and sent to a computer to process into an image.
A radiologist will monitor the entire procedure from a different room with the help of a microphone and speakers.
Usually, it will take around 25 minutes to complete the entire procedure.
What are the risks involved in a CT scan?
CT scan uses a minimal amount of radiation to examine the inner parts of your body. In general, the radiation used in a CT scan is quite safe. But there is a risk of developing cancer if you take a CT scan regularly.
Also, you may develop allergic reactions if the contrast dye is used in the procedure.
Apart from this, there are no known risks or complications in a CT scan.
