Frequently Asked Questions About Mammography Test

What is a Mammography / Mammogram test?

Mammography which is also called a mammogram is an advanced X-Ray procedure that is done to detect and diagnose breast cancer. It is an effective tool to examine the soft tissues present in the breast.

Mammography / Mammogram is the most effective tool to detect breast cancer at the earliest. It also helps to examine the progress of chemotherapy or any other ongoing treatment for breast cancer in women.

The mammography test can be divided into two based on the purpose

  • Screening Mammography:

Mammography screening is done to examine the presence of tumors in the breast which cannot be felt. This helps to detect breast cancer at an early stage. The microcalcification (calcium deposits) which is an indicator of breast cancer can also be detected with the help of mammography.

  • Diagnostic Mammography:

This is done on a particular part of the breast where the abnormality is found during the screening mammography. Normally, it takes a lot of time compared to screening mammography to complete the test. It is done to diagnose and plan for the treatment.

What is breast cancer?

Normally, the human cells grow and divide over time which gives way to new cells. But sometimes these new cells may not be a perfect replicate of the mother cell due to some errors during cell division. This is called a mutation.

These abnormal cells are called cancerous cells. Our body has a built-in error control process to destruct these abnormal cells. But sometimes they may fail to destruct these cells which may grow and multiply over time. These cells then form into a tumor. If it is left untreated, few cells may break and form new tumors in other parts of the body.

In the case of breast cancer, these abnormal cells form tumors in the breast. It is often felt as a lump in the breast. Only the X-Ray can detect these lumps in the breast.

Sometimes, breast cancer may originate from the milk ducts which won’t normally spread outside the breast. Such breast cancer is called Carcinoma (DCIS). If breast cancer spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream it is called metastatic cancer.

Who should take the Mammography test?

Generally, mammography is done to detect and diagnose breast cancer in women. It is highly recommended in the following cases

  • For women above 40 years of age
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • In case of chest radiation therapy, it is advised annually from early 30’s
  • Gene mutation (BRCA1 or BRCA2)

Your doctor may ask you to take the MRI Breast scan along with the mammography to get additional information.

When is it recommended?

Mammography is done if you experience any of the following symptoms

  • A lump in the breast
  • An abnormal change in size or shape of the breast
  • Change in skin texture
  • A lump in either of the armpits

Generally, it is recommended annually for women above 45 years of age as they are at high risk of breast cancer.

How should I prepare for the Mammogram test?

There are no special preparations required for the mammography test. You may be asked to avoid any kind of powders, deodorants, or lotions on the chest area prior to the test.

It is advised not to take your mammography test during your menstrual period. Also inform your doctor if you are pregnant or on any kind of hormone replacement therapy.

How is Mammography done?

Mammography is a non-invasive technique to examine the breast to detect the presence of tumors. You will be asked to place your breast in a mammogram unit that is capable to scan from different angles.

A technician will compress your breast with the help of a paddle to spread the tissues and even out the thickness of the breast. Then X-Ray will pass through your breast which will be absorbed at different rates by the tissues. These signals will be picked by a detector which will be sent to a specialized computer to process into detailed images.

Normally, it takes around 30 minutes to complete the entire procedure of mammography test.

What are the risks involved in the test?

Mammography / Mammogram involves only a few or limited risks. As the X-Ray is used to detect abnormalities in the breast, you will be exposed to a small amount of radiation.

It is important to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or expected to be pregnant as the radiation may harm the fetus.
