Frequently Asked Questions About Aldosterone Test
What is an Aldosterone Test?
Aldosterone test which is also called as ALD or serum aldosterone test is done to measure the level of ALD in the blood. Aldosterone is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands present above the kidneys. The adrenal gland is responsible to produce various other important hormones in our body.
The aldosterone hormone is responsible to regulate the blood pressure, sodium (salt), and potassium in our body. The abnormal level of ALD in the blood may indicate medical conditions such as cirrhosis, possible heart failure, kidney disease, low or high sodium, and potassium.
If the level of aldosterone is high it means that you may have high blood pressure and low potassium level. This condition is called as hyperaldosteronism.
Why is Aldosterone Test Done?
Normally the aldosterone test is done to diagnose high blood pressure, low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension), underactive adrenal glands, etc. It is also done to diagnose fluid and electrolyte disorders which are caused by
- Heart problems
- Diabetes
- Adrenal disease
- Kidney failure
Is there any Preparation Required for Aldosterone Test?
An aldosterone test is a simple blood test. It should be done only at a certain time in a day as the aldosterone level varies throughout the day. Your doctor will inform you of the time on which you should take the test.
Normally, the aldosterone levels will be high in the morning. You should stop or reduce the level of sodium intake a few hours before the test. Avoid exercising on the day of the test, as it will affect the sodium level in the body.
It is important to consult with your doctor if you are taking any medications prior to the test. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medications. It is also recommended to wear half sleeved clothes to the test for convenience.
What is the Procedure of the Aldosterone Test?
The procedure of aldosterone test is similar to that of any other blood test. A nurse will put a tight band around your arm to make the veins visible. A disinfectant liquid will be used to clean the area from where the blood will be drawn.
A needle will be then injected into the vein to draw the blood sample and will be collected in a tube. Then a cotton ball will be used to put pressure on the puncture site to stop the bleeding. The collected sample will be then sent to the laboratory for further testing.
What does the Aldosterone Test Result Mean?
Aldosterone test detects the abnormal level of ALD in the blood. The high level of aldosterone hormone in the blood indicates the increase of sodium and low potassium in the blood. This condition is called hyperaldosteronism which is caused by kidney failure, congestive heart failure, conn syndrome, etc.
The low level of aldosterone hormone in the blood refers to low blood pressure, low sodium and potassium levels, dehydration, etc. This condition is called hypoaldosteronism.
Your doctor will ask you to take other tests along with the aldosterone test such as renin-ALD ratio, intravenous saline fusion, plasma renin, etc to diagnose the abnormal level of aldosterone hormone.
