Frequently Asked Questions About Growth Scan

What is Fetal Growth Scan?

The Fetal Growth Scan is an ultrasound imaging Scan done in the 36th week of mother’s pregnancy. It is done to check baby’s overall development and health or correct positioning in the mother’s womb.

A growth scan helps in providing all the necessary information to the concerned doctor about the health of the mother and the baby. Through the scan, a doctor can detect various abnormalities or deformities in the baby beforehand.

Your healthcare provider may ask you for a growth scan to check your abdominal measurements (smaller or larger than expected), check for complications held in a previous pregnancy and assess any inherited maternal diabetes or high blood pressure.

It is also known as Growth Scan, USG Fetal Growth Scan, Ultrasound Growth Scan, Fetal Wellbeing Scan or Positioning Scan. Basically, it can be done whenever between 23rd week – 40th week of pregnancy.

Why a pregnant woman is recommended for Fetal Growth Scan?

An expecting mother is often suggested for a fetal growth scan. A doctor recommends this test in the third-trimester to:

  • measure the baby’s head, abdomen, and thigh bone
  • evaluate the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby
  • observe the baby’s activity
  • measure the blood flow in the umbilical cord
  • record the position of the placenta.
  • know your baby’s position and weight
  • check your baby’s wellbeing and circulation
  • assess how a previous cesarean scar appears

What preparations are required before a Fetal Growth Scan?

Your doctor may not suggest for any certain preparation. You will not have to fill your bladder with liquids as your fetus will grow enough to be seen during the scan.

Preferably wear a loose and comfortable pair of clothes during the scan. As you will be asked to lower your waistband or lift your upper garment. Avoid wearing a single piece dress.

If you feel something abnormal about your baby, inform your doctor immediately.

A fetal growth scan is completely safe and non-invasive for the baby as well as the mother. As it does not involve any use of radiations during the process.

How a Fetal Growth Scan is done?

A fetal growth Scan is done similarly to other ultrasound procedures. It takes less than 20 minutes to complete the whole procedure when done by an expert sonographer.

Growth Scan is done by an ultrasound machine. The machine bounces the sound waves that echo off the fetus. These sound waves are transformed into visible pictures with the help of a special computer. A transducer detects the sound waves and transmits to the monitor attached to an ultrasound machine. A transducer is a medical device that is similar to a flatly shaped joystick. It works as a sound waves detector that bounces off body tissues and makes echoes.

During the scan, your technician will ask you to lie on an examination table comfortably. They may take a physical examination of your belly. Then, a clear lubricating jelly is spread over the mother’s tummy that will help to reduce the friction during the moving of the transducer.

Your sonographer will move the transducer in different directions and angles on your belly. This will help the doctor to look your baby’s health and development with different views.  Generally, a growth scan gives a 2-dimensional cross-sectional view of the fetus, that produces a report in black, white and grey in color.

Results are available in a day or two after your examination. Your Doctor will be in the right position to interpret your results thoroughly.

How much does a Fetal Growth Scan tell about the baby?

During your ultrasound growth scan, your technician will sum up various measurements of the fetus. The measurements are displayed on a growth chart, according to gestational age (the baby’s age). The basic measurements taken during a growth scan includes:

BPD (Biparietal diameter): It is measured across the head

Head Circumference (HC): It is measured around the head

Abdominal Circumference (AC): It is measured around the abdomen

Femur Length (FL): It is measured for the length of the thigh bone.

A graph is made combining the above measurements. Your baby may weigh more if the graph crosses 10% line drawn on your reports. If the fetus EFW (Estimate Fetal Weight) is lower than the percentage then your baby will be considered Small for gestational age (SGA).

At times babies are larger in size compared to the normal. There can be many reasons if a fetus is larger in size such as inherited maternal diabetes during pregnancy. These complications can lead to extreme labor pain or C-section delivery.

Usually, the fetus is stable by the 37th week of pregnancy, it stops changing its position frequently. And if the fetus is in the wrong direction then your doctor may suggest you for an ECV (External Cephalic Version). It is a procedure when the baby is turned by hand to fit in the appropriate position to be delivered easily.

A fetal growth scan can also let you know if your fetus isn’t getting enough oxygen from the placenta. The report shows a lower score in this situation.

Your doctor might ask you to get additional scans in the last trimester of your pregnancy if they find any complications in the result of the Fetal Growth Scan. The complications can be:

  • less or no movement of your baby,
  • wrong positioned baby, such as breech, oblique or transverse,
  • mother carrying twins,
  • wrapped umbilical cord around the baby’s neck,
  • less or more amount of amniotic fluid,
  • larger or smaller size of the baby.

Your doctor may ask you to come for the second session of Fetal Growth Scan if your baby is not in a cooperating position or is sleeping during the scan.
