Frequently Asked Questions About Mammography Test
What is Mammography / Mammogram?
Mammography uses low energy X-ray to get a detailed image of the breast. This is also referred to as a mammogram. There are two types of Mammography test, they are
- Screening Mammography: It is done to detect any tumors in the breast which cannot be felt. It is just a screening test that helps to detect breast cancer at an early stage. It also helps in finding any microcalcification (deposits of calcium), which is an indicator of breast cancer.
- Diagnostic Mammography: It is done after the detection of breast cancer. It is also done if any abnormality is seen in screening mammography. The diagnostic mammography is done on a particular part of the breast where there is an abnormality. It is time consuming compared to the screening mammogram. The diagnostic mammography helps in further diagnostics.
What is the procedure of Mammography?
You will be asked to place your breast in a mammogram unit which scans it at different angles. During the scan, your breast will be compressed with a paddle by the technician.
It is done to even out the breast thickness and spread the tissues to detect any abnormalities in the breast. Both the breast will be scanned at two different angles producing four X Ray images. If your doctor feels it appropriate, additional images may be taken for diagnostics.
Precautions before Mammogram / Mammography:
- If you are or likely to be pregnant, then inform your doctor about it.
- Avoid taking a mammogram during your menstrual periods.
- It is advisable to consult with your doctor if you are on hormone replacement therapy.
- Don’t wear any powder, deodorant, or powder on your breast before the mammogram.
Who should get Mammography done?
- It is recommended for women above 40 years of age to take the mammography tests annually.
- Women with a family history of breast cancer.
- In case of any chest radiation therapy, it is advisable to take mammography done annually from your early 30’s.
- Women with gene mutations of BRCA1 or BRCA2.
In some cases, you will be asked to take an MRI breast scan along with mammography.
How a Breast Ultrasound is different from a Mammogram?
In the case of ultrasound, sound waves are used to detect any abnormalities in the breast. But it is only a second-line diagnostic procedure to examine the abnormalities.
Sometimes the information obtained from ultrasound may not be accurate compared to a mammogram. So doctors usually do not recommend ultrasound for regular screening of breast cancer.
What are the symptoms that call for Breast cancer screening?
The mammogram is usually recommended for women above 45 years of age. But it is also advisable to take a mammography test in case of the following symptoms
- A lump or thickened skin in either breast
- Change in size or shape of one or both breasts
- Discharge from either of nipples
- Change in skin texture
- A lump in either of armpits
What is Breast cancer?
If there is an increasing growth of abnormal cells, it may result in cancer. The human cells grow and divide giving way to new cells. The new cells formed should be a perfect replicate of the mother cell. Sometimes errors may happen during cell division which is called a mutation. The new cells will be abnormal in this case.
These abnormal cells are called cancerous cells. But our body has a built-in error control process that is capable of destructing those cancerous cells. But sometimes they may fail to destruct the cancerous cells. Over time, these abnormal cells grow and multiply. This increase in the growth of abnormal cells is called a tumor. If the tumor grows further, few cells can break and travel through the bloodstream to other parts of the body forming new tumors.
The same process happens in the case of breast cancer. The abnormal cells form tumors in the breast which is often felt as a lump. It can be detected only with the help of X-ray. Breast cancer may originate from the milk ducts. In this case, cancer won’t spread outside the breast. Such breast cancers are called Carcinoma (DCIS). This is usually detected on a mammography test.
Breast cancer may also spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream which is called metastatic cancer.
In India, almost 12.3% of women develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Most women in India find their cancer only at the later stage. Due to this, most women don’t survive in spite of taking the best treatment.
