Frequently Asked Questions About MRA Scan

The full form of MRA is Magnetic Resonance Angiography / Magnetic Resonance Angiogram. It is also known as MRI Angiography. MRA Scan is an imaging technique that helps to visualize the arteries present in the key areas of your body. Arteries are the blood vessels which carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the other body parts.

MRA uses radio waves and magnetic fields to diagnose the blockages in the artery caused due to cholesterol, calcium, and other blood substances present in your body. Artery blockages may affect the normal blood flow in the body and increase the chance of stroke. MRA also figures out the abnormalities and blood clots in the arteries.

Why is an MRI Angiography / MRA Test prescribed?

MRA test diagnoses the medical conditions like bulging or widening of an artery part due to some weakness called an arterial aneurysm. Your doctor may recommend you take an MRA scan if he suspects you of having heart diseases, trauma, or carotid artery disease. MRI Angiography also detects the abnormal communication between the blood vessels and helps with cancer treatment.

MRA scans can be done with or without the contrast agent. The contrast agent is nothing but the dye injected into the veins before taking the test. This contrast agent helps to produce more clear and detailed images.

Is there any preparation required for an MRA test?

MRA Scan doesn’t require any special preparation. You can have your usual diet. Wear a comfortable dress, however, you should change into the gown provided in the lab. Remove all the jewelry and metallic objects as they may affect the magnetic fields during the scan. Since tattoos might also have a metal content in its ink, inform the doctor before the test.

Who shouldn’t take an MRA scan?

MRI Angiography is not recommended for the people with the following medical conditions

  • Pregnant women
  • Breast-feeding mothers (can consult your doctor before taking the test)
  • Pacemakers
  • Cochlear or ear implants
  • Kidney disease
  • Spinal stimulator
  • Metal coils placed in blood vessels
  • Recently placed artificial joints
  • Insulin or Chemotherapy port
  • Aneurism clips or other surgical staples

What happens during an MRA?

Unlike CT Angiography, MRA Scan uses powerful magnets and radio waves to visualize the arteries in your body. The technician will ask you to lie on a table that will slide you into a MRI scanner. MRI scanner is nothing but a large area of the circular magnetic field. To avoid any blocks in the blood vessels salt water will be injected through the needle before the MRA test. Sometimes MRA requires a dye (contrast agent)  called gadolinium which will be injected into the vein to get a clear and detailed image of the arteries.

The magnetic field present inside the MRI scanner lines up the hydrogen atom from your body for a short period of time. The hydrogen atoms transmit a signal to the radio waves which is sent to the computer. The computer then produces a clear and detailed image of your arteries. You may hear loud tapping noises because of the magnetic field. It is important to remain still in the same position to get a more clear and quality image.

It usually takes around 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete an MRA scan.

Is there any risk of taking an MRA?

MRI Angiography is a non-invasive and painless procedure to visualize your arteries. Sometimes an injection of the dye causes skin irritation. It is better to inform your doctor prior to the test if you are allergic to chemicals. People having poor kidney function may face Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis. It is a rare disease that is similar to a skin disease caused by the injection of the dye. It darkens and thickens the large areas of your skin. There is no possibility of radiation exposure in an MRI Angiography.

How long does it take to get the MRA scan result?

It usually takes atleast a day for the radiologist to prepare the report. He analyses all the images of your arteries and prepares a report to send your doctor. Your doctor analyses the report and may prescribe you additional tests or some therapies.
