What is a Brain MRI Scan?
Brain MRI is also known as Head MRI. Head / Brain MRI is an effective non-invasive tool to visualize the internal parts of the brain. It examines the anatomy of the brain. It helps to detect and diagnose abnormalities in the innermost parts of the brain such as the pituitary gland. A contrast agent may be used to get a detailed picture of the brain.

How to prepare for the scan?

How is the procedure performed?
MRI machine looks like a huge doughnut with large circular magnets around it. The inner parts of the brain are visualized with the help of strong electromagnetic pulses. These circular magnets rotate around your head taking several pictures of the brain. The magnets produce radiofrequency pulses which re-aligns the hydrogen atoms existing in our brain. This re-alignment of hydrogen atoms does not cause any chemical changes in the tissues.
These hydrogen atoms return to their normal alignment once the magnetic field is turned off. When they return to their normal alignment these atoms emit different amounts of energies differing from the type of tissues. The MRI machine picks these signals and sends it to a specialized computer to process the image.
The computer then processes these signals to generate images of the brain. The entire process of the MRI brain will be monitored by a radiologist from a different room with the help of a microphone and speakers.

What are the risks involved?
