Frequently Asked Questions About Doppler Test
What is a Doppler Test?
In a Doppler test, the flow of blood through veins and arteries is calculated by the high-frequency sound waves. These sound waves are converted into images or graphs depending on the type of Doppler test which will be explained later in this article.
This painless and risk-free test takes only thirty minutes to one hour and the results are also available to the patient as soon as the test is completed. The test is harmless because it does not involve radiation in the process.
What are the General Uses of the Doppler Test?
The Doppler test is used for the following reasons:
- To analyze the blood flow in arteries, veins, and heart for peripheral artery disease.
- Check for blocked arteries and weakness in arteries i.e for an aneurysm.
- To track the after-treatment effect on blood vessels.
- And check for tumors in the stomach and for problems related to blood flow in the pancreas, liver, kidney, and spleen.
When is a Doppler Test Prescribed?
Your doctor may recommend a doppler test when he/she suspects the following:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): If you are a smoker or obese you are most likely to have DVT. DVT is common in people above the age of 50. The risk involved in the surgery process is high because the blood clot is formed in a vein that is located deep inside the body.
- Superficial Thrombophlebitis: It is highly likely that you have superficial thrombophlebitis if the vein bulges along with the skin or if the skin over the vein darkens. However, this is cured within two weeks while the hardness in the vein may take longer to become normal.
- Atherosclerosis: While atherosclerosis is mainly caused due to ageing it can also occur because of family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and lack of exercise.
- Thromboagniitis Obliterans: It is also known as Buerger’s disease. It is common in men over the age of 40 who use tobacco which also includes chewing of tobacco. While there is no cure for this disease it can be prevented from progression if the consumption of tobacco is stopped.
What are the Types of the Doppler Test?
- Continuous Wave Doppler: The flow of blood in the vessels is analyzed by the pitch change in the sound wave. The flow of blood in the region that is blocked or narrow is determined by the doctor by observing the pitch change.
- Duplex Doppler: Standard ultrasound methods are used to create images of the blood vessels and the organs surrounding it. Apart from this, the sound waves are used to create a graph showing the direction and the speed of blood flow.
- Colour Doppler: With the help of the standard ultrasound methods images of the blood vessels are created and the sound waves create colors on the image to show the direction and the speed of the blood flow.
How is the Test Done?
Generally, one should not wear any jewelry and will be asked to change into the gown provided for the test. If you are a smoker it is advised to stop smoking 4-5 hours before the test. If the test is to be done on your stomach, you should have to fast for 6-12 hours and drink less water. Women taking pelvic ultrasound have to drink one liter of water before an hour of the test.
The head will be turned accordingly for the neck and head doppler scan. The legs and the hands are turned out to get better results for the leg and hand doppler scan. You will be asked to lie down on your back for chest and abdominal scan.
A gel is applied in the region of the suspected blood clot or narrow blood flow and a transducer is pressed on the gel to get the image of the blood vessels. The test usually takes thirty minutes and you have to be still throughout the process. Once the test is done the gel is cleaned from the area.
