What are the preparations required for the test?

You may be asked to eat a fat-free diet before the evening of the procedure if certain body parts such as the gallbladder, spleen, etc are to be examined.
If the bladder is examined, you should hold the urine for a few hours as the procedure requires a full bladder to get detailed information.
If you are on medication, consult with your doctor regarding this. You may be asked to follow some special instructions from your doctor.
How is the procedure performed?
Sonography uses sound waves to capture live images of our body parts. A transducer is used to send high-frequency sound waves into the body.
You may be asked to change into a gown provided by the lab and lie down on the examination table. The body part that is to be examined will be kept exposed throughout the procedure.
A lubricating gel will be applied on your skin by a technician to avoid any friction between the skin and the transducers while rubbing on the body part which is examined.
The transducer sends the sound waves into the body which bounce back in the form of echo when they hit the internal organs. These echos will be collected by the transducer and send to a specialized computer to generate the image.
Generally, the entire process of ultrasound/sonography lasts up to 30 minutes depending on the study.

Ultrasound / Sonography does not involve any side effects. As the sonography uses sound waves to capture live pictures, it is completely safe as you are not exposed to any kind of radiation.
