What is a Brain MRI Scan?
Brain MRI is also known as Head MRI. Head / Brain MRI is an effective non-invasive tool to visualize the internal parts of the brain. It examines the anatomy of the brain. It helps to detect and diagnose abnormalities in the innermost parts of the brain such as the pituitary gland. A contrast agent may be used to get a detailed picture of the brain.
MRI Scan Brain is primarily done to detect and diagnose abnormalities or injuries in the inner parts of the brain.
Why is MRI Brain done?
MRI Scan Brain helps doctors to detect and diagnose various medical conditions in the inner parts of the brain. The MRI brain is normally done to diagnose the following medical conditions
- Brain tumor
- Strokes
- Brain infections
- Hydrocephalus
- Pituitary gland disorders
- Cause of seizures
- Aneurysms
- Inflammation or swelling
- Developmental anomalies
- Vascular problems
How to prepare for the scan?
MRI uses strong magnetic fields and electrical pulses to generate a detailed picture of our brain. If you carry the objects with metallic contents during the scan, the images may become distorted. So make sure that you don’t carry metallic objects such as jewelry, watch, etc inside the MRI room. It is also necessary to inform your doctor if you have any kind of medical implants.
Contrast material may be used sometimes to produce a detailed picture of the brain. It will be either injected or given orally prior to the scan. You may have to follow a diet that your doctor will inform if the contrast dye is used. Also, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies to the contrast material or sickle cell disease prior to the scan.
It is also very important to consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or expected to be pregnant prior to the scan. The electromagnetic pulse may sometimes harm the fetus. Also, inform your doctor if you are afraid of closed spaces.
How is the procedure performed?
MRI machine looks like a huge doughnut with large circular magnets around it. The inner parts of the brain are visualized with the help of strong electromagnetic pulses. You will be asked to lie down on a table that is attached to the MRI machine. The table will slide into the MRI machine to the center of the magnet to visualize the brain.
These circular magnets rotate around your head taking several pictures of the brain. The magnets produce radiofrequency pulses which re-aligns the hydrogen atoms existing in our brain. This re-alignment of hydrogen atoms does not cause any chemical changes in the tissues.
These hydrogen atoms return to their normal alignment once the magnetic field is turned off. When they return to their normal alignment these atoms emit different amounts of energies differing from the type of tissues. The MRI machine picks these signals and sends it to a specialized computer to process the image.
The computer then processes these signals to generate images of the brain. The entire process of the MRI brain will be monitored by a radiologist from a different room with the help of a microphone and speakers.
It normally takes 1 hour to complete the entire process depending on the type of MRI Brain study.
What are the risks involved?
MRI scan brain has very few or limited potential risks mostly due to the contrast material used. There is a mild risk of kidney failure due to the contrast dye. You may also develop allergic reactions because of this.
What are the limitations of MRI Brain Scan?
The MRI brain scan has its own limitations. The images may be distorted or get a blur if there is any movement during the procedure. So it is important to remain still through the scan, which is quite hard if you are sick. The patients with any medical implants cannot take the MRI brain due to the electromagnetic pulses used.
These electromagnetic pulses may also affect the fetus if you are pregnant. So it is advised not to take an MRI scan during the first trimester.
