What is an MRI scan?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the full form of MRI. It is one of the most commonly used imaging techniques to visualize the inner parts of the body. The MRI uses strong electromagnetic pulses and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of our organs.
There are two different types of MRI machines namely 1.5 Tesla MRI and 3 Tesla MRI. Depending on the requirement your doctor may ask you to take the scan in any of these machines.
It is an effective tool to detect and diagnose various abnormalities in the inner parts of our body without using radiation. There are different kinds of studies such as MRI scan brain, MRI angiography, MRI scan KUB, etc.
Why is it done?
MRI can be done on almost every part of our body to diagnose various disorders such as
- Brain injury
- Heart disease
- Blockage in blood vessel
- Stroke
- Cancer
- Injuries in the spinal cord
- Bone infection
- Liver disease
- Kidney disorders
- Damage in joints
It is also done to monitor an ongoing treatment for a certain medical condition.
How should I prepare for the MRI scan?
MRI scan does not require any special preparation. You will be asked to change into a loose gown provided by the lab for the scan. You should not carry any metallic objects inside the MRI room as it uses strong magnets to get a detailed picture of the body part.
In some cases, a contrast dye is used to produce a more enhanced image. It may either be injected in the vein or given orally. Your doctor will provide the necessary instruction if the contrast material is used.
How is the MRI procedure performed?
MRI scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to visualize the body parts. The MRI machine looks like a huge doughnut with large circular magnets. If you are claustrophobic, your doctor may suggest you take an open MRI scan which is closed only on one side. You will be asked to lie down on the table attached to the MRI machine.
The table slowly slides into the machine fully or partly depending on the body part that is to be examined. A strong magnetic field will be created in your body by the MRI machine.
A specialized computer which is located in a different room picks these signals to generate a detailed image. You will hear loud noises from the MRI machine throughout the procedure.
It usually takes up to 90 minutes to complete the entire procedure depending on the body part that is examined.
What are the risks involved in an MRI scan?
MRI Scan involves few or limited risks. Unlike other imaging techniques, it does not use any radiation to produce a detailed image of inner parts. However as it uses strong magnets, people with some medical implants cannot take the test. But, you can take an advanced MRI scan called Maverick MRI if you have any kind of implants.
You may develop allergic reactions due to the contrast dye. It is important to inform your doctor if you have any know allergies to contrast dye prior to the scan. There is also a slight risk of kidney failure due to this.
