The full form of VEP is Visual Evoked Potential. The VEP test helps to measure the entire working of our vision system. The light from an image entering our eye is turned into electrical energy by the cells in our retina.
The retina is a sensitive layer present at the back of our eye. The electrical energy received from the retina is then sent to the brain where the image we see is processed.
VEP helps to measure the time taken for an image to travel from our eye to the brain. The normal time-taken for an image to reach our brain vision system is 100 milliseconds. If the time taken is longer than normal, it is an abnormal VEP. The results obtained from the VEP test helps in further diagnosis.
Your doctor may recommend you to take a VEP test when the following changes are seen in your vision.
- Vision loss
- Double vision
- Blurred Vision
- Flashing lights
- Alterations in color vision
- The weakening of the eyes, arms or legs
This test is also taken by those who are undergoing treatment for vision loss. It is done to know how the visual system is responding to the treatment.
VEP test can be done using two methods. They are Pattern VEP and Flash VEP.
Pattern VEP: This method generally uses the checkerboard pattern of black and white color. Patients will be asked to concentrate on the checkerboard pattern to record the electric signals.
Flash VEP: In this method, flash is used to record the visual stimuli. You will be asked to concentrate on the flash which appears in a time gap of 1 second. This method is normally done to the patients who don’t respond to the pattern VEP.
The VEP test is done with the help of a computer. The sensory pads are placed in three small areas of your head to detect signals from your brain. The first pad is placed above the projecting part of the occipital bone. The occipital bone is the bone that forms the back and base of your skull.
The second pad is placed on your forehead and the third pad on your ear. The areas where the sensory pads are placed will be cleansed by a technician before placing them. These sensory pads are connected to the computer which observes the changes happening in your visual stimuli during the test.
The visual stimuli of different patterns are used to elicit the electrical response from your retina. It is done with the help of a computer screen. You will be asked to focus on the different patterns shown in the computer screen.
The electrical signal from the retina which is sent to the visual processing centre of your brain is recorded with the help of sensory pads. The computer then creates a report of your entire vision system. This report helps your doctor to interpret the problem in your vision system.
It normally takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete a VEP test.
There is no special preparation required for the VEP. You can have a normal diet. But you should clean your face and hair prior to the test. You should not wear any powder, gels, spray oils, lotion or makeup.
If you are taking any medications, then inform your doctor regarding this. Have a proper sleep the night before the test.
The optic nerve is the most important part of our vision system as it transmits the visual information from our eye to the brain. Any damage to the optic nerve may affect our vision.
The VEP helps in detecting the optic neuritis. The optic neuritis is nothing but an inflammation that damages the optic nerve. The VEP test gives an idea of various visual disorders.
The VEP is a non-invasive method to examine the working of your vision system. There are rarely any side effects from this test. Apart from possible minor skin irritation due to the sensory pads, there are no complications.
If you have any neurological disorders, it is advisable to consult your doctor before taking the test.
